Based
upon the Marvel Comics superhero team with the same name, "The Fantastic Four"
debuted on ABC on September 9, 1967. Almost all of the show's episodes were
straight adaptations from the original comics written by Stan Lee and drawn by
Jack Kirby. When scientist Reed Richards; his wife, Sue Richards; her brother,
Johnny Storm; and pilot Ben Grimm travel into outer space, they are bombarded by
powerful cosmic rays. After crashing back on Earth, the group discovers that
they now have super powers. Reed can stretch his body into any form, Sue can
turn invisible, Johnny can control, manipulate, and burst into fire, and Ben
became the rock-like powerful monster, the Thing. Together, they unite and
become the Fantastic Four, saving the world from evil menaces like Dr. Doom, the
Mole Man, and the Skrull Empire.
